ORMOND BEACH -- There's not much the usually cocky Perego can say about it.

But Sunday's third-round audition for the television show "America's Got Talent" in Orlando is about more than the million-dollar prize, it's about his Art Army mantra: We are the art. Everyone is an artist.

"It's really just my excuse to get the message out," said Perego, a larger-than-life performance artist who's made his mark with live art shows and roving Vagabond Art parties.

Now Perego -- he's a one-name kind of guy -- and well-known break dancer Heps Fury could be taking their frenetic music, light, art and dance show to a national audience.

Since the two met at one of Perego's art parties two years ago, they've collaborated to create an unusual mix of Perego's art using Fury's body as the instrument and the floor as canvas.

"We kind of figured out the extreme dynamics of performing arts together where we combine dance acrobatics, which is me, and live painting, which is him," Fury said.

Venezuelan-born, Miami-bred Fury has been dancing professionally and touring internationally for 14 years with the likes of Daddy Yankee, Disney, Universal Studios and New York City's Rock Steady crew.

Fury, now based in Orlando, is also a visual artist, creating live graffiti murals and energetic abstracts.

"Since I'm a dancer and artist I figured one day I was going to combine," said Fury, 31.

"He's a multi-talented guy," said Perego from the artistic chaos of his Ormond Beach home.

Perego, 42, has been an artist for more than 20 years, living the art scene and painting murals in New Jersey, Philadelphia and eventually Daytona Beach in the early 1990s.

He's done murals and live-art shows from Disney to Las Vegas and worked as art director for Cirque du Soleil's premiere party in Orlando.

Perego's Art Army, which boasts thousands of members nationwide, galvanizes artists without a platform to display their work. And it brings creative people together at Vagabond Art parties, featuring body painting, liquid light shows, live bands and guests-as-artists.

"People are so different, but we're all one because we're all creative," Perego said.

Together, Perego and Fury have found a high-energy creative symbiosis.

"It's very easy for us to sit down and brainstorm," Fury said. "Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming because we have so many ideas."

With Saturday's audition creeping up, Perego was hard at work on another painting in his home studio cluttered with canvasses, paint and his 5-year-old daughter Phoenix's pieces.

Neither he nor Fury would say what their game plan is for the reality TV talent show or whether they'd show up on national television in the coming months.

"We have all sorts of cool performances planned. People are not going to even know what to expect," Perego said. "It's going to be like 'What are the

But still, I remember where I was -- and that may say even more about what some have labeled the most influential reality TV show ever.

Since then I've become a "Survivor" geek. I've seen every episode but one (and yes, it still bothers me). I've met close to half of the "Survivor" contestants. I even own the hat host Jeff Probst wore in one of the seasons.

All that, and I actually have a girlfriend. (Though she doesn't take "The tribe has spoken" as an adequate explanation.)

So as the biannual "Survivor" franchise turns 10 years and 20 seasons old with the premiere of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains" tonight, here's a look back at the most memorable moments of the past decade.
10. The first game twist
"Survivor: Africa," fall 2001

After two seasons of "Survivor," the path to winning was laid out: make
an alliance, get the numbers, vote out everyone else. Five episodes into
"Africa," cocky Silas and his alliance were in control. When castaways
were asked via tree mail to send their three "best" tribemates to meet
Probst, Silas volunteered for what they thought would be a challenge.
Instead, viewers and castaways alike were shocked when the threesomes
were forced to switch tribes. Just like that, hunter became hunted and
was voted out that night, and producers began trying more and more
stunts to keep the game fresh, to varying results.

9. The Russell show
"Survivor: Samoa," fall 2009

Maybe it's because it's still fresh, but no one dominated episode to
episode more than Russell did in "Samoa" -- and we're 19 seasons into
"Survivor!" Russell dumped out canteens and burnt socks. He told his
tribe he lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. He uncovered not one, not
two, but THREE hidden immunity necklaces without clues. And for the
most part, if he wanted someone gone, they were gone. Russell did it all
-- except win. Yet he was such a force of personality he got national
media paying attention to "Survivor" for the first time in years.

8. Men vs. women
"Survivor: The Amazon," spring 2003

Who's better at "Survivor," men or women? In the first five seasons,
male winners held a 3-2 advantage, but that didn't prevent
overconfidence from oozing out of the men when they were told "Amazon"
tribes would be divided by gender. Of course, the women quickly show
that "win Survivor" wasn't on the guys' "honey do" lists by dominating
the first challenge, and bikini model Jenna went on to win the season.

7. Beef jerky and peanut butter
"Survivor: The Australian Outback," spring 2001 and "Survivor: The
Amazon," spring 2003

In the second episode of "Outback," original "Survivor" femme fatale
Jerri tells her tribemates she saw loner Kel eating beef jerky, leading
to a witch hunt through his belongings. They didn't find jerky, but
Kel's torch was still snuffed. Fans remember "Amazon's"Jenna and Heidi
in a different way. The pair took it all off during a challenge to
receive Oreos and peanut butter, and months later viewers were able to
read between the pixilated lines in an issue of Playboy.

6. Cook Islands, segregation islands
"Survivor: Cook Islands," fall 2006

After 12 seasons, "Survivor" producers had caught on that aside from a
few token, often stereotypically cast contestants, the show was whiter
than Colby's teeth. The ratings for the preceding season, "Survivor:
Panama" were a franchise low. Solution? How about casting equal numbers
of white, black, Hispanic and Asian contestants? Great idea, except they
were divided into four racially segregated tribes. Worst
racism-as-entertainment idea since "Heil Honey I'm Home." (Google it,
this English series is exactly what you think).

5. Mike falls in the fire
"Survivor: The Australian Outback," spring 2001

How would you like your hand flesh -- original or extra crispy? If you
opted for the former, then you were in for a treat with the sixth
episode of "Outback." That was when wild pig killer Mike became
overwhelmed by smoke while tending to a fire, causing him to take a
header into the flames. Seeing Mike with pieces of skin dangling off his
hands is the show's second-most disturbing image after flabby, naked
Richard Hatch.

4. The 'All-Stars' experiment
"Survivor: All-Stars," spring 2004

After seven seasons, the popularity of "Survivor" had waned from
"phenomenon" to "top-10 staple." What to do? How about bring back the
players we loved and those we loved to hate for another go on the
island, then premiere it right after the Super Bowl? It was a grand idea
that ultimately fell flat because of too many ugly moments, the ugliest
being Amber "Why is she on 'All-Stars?'¤" winning by riding the
coattails of future fiance Boston Rob.

3. Colby picks Tina instead of Keith
"Survivor: The Australian Outback," spring 2001

While people appreciated the deceptiveness of fat, naked Richard in
season one, America fell in love in season two with the cattle rancher
with the movie star grin, Colby. His alliance with Southern soccer mom
Tina and rice cooking-challenged chef Keith took them to the finals.
With Colby winning final immunity, he could have chosen to go up against
Keith, who he'd probably beat, or Tina, who deserved it more. Colby
picked Tina and lost, landing him top billing on "Survivor" geeks' lists
for dumbest decisions.

2. Fairplay's not-so-dead grandma
"Survivor: Pearl Islands," fall 2003

Jon "Jonny Fairplay" Dalton will go down as one of the most memorable
"Survivor" contestants ever, and it was a ruse that unfortunately turned
him into a household name. Before a challenge in which the winner got
to visit with a loved one, Fairplay's friend informs him that Jon's
grandmother has died. Fellow castaways let Jon win so he can find out
more about Grandma Fairplay's demise, and then we find out grandma is
"at home right now watching 'Jerry Springer,' " and it was a just ploy
to gain sympathy. (As a feel-good postscript, four years later Fairplay
loses several teeth after being dropped on his head by unlikely karma
avenger Danny Bonaduce).

1. Sue's rats and snakes speech
"Survivor Borneo," spring 2000

Through the years, some Survivors voted out take it in stride but some
have kept grudges. At the final jury of the first season, truck-driving
Sue showed she was still a bit hot under the Buff after friend Kelly
turned on her. In her jury speech, Sue implores them to "let it end the
way that Mother Nature intended: for the snake (mastermind Richard) to
eat the rat (backstabber Kelly)." America then watched Richard Hatch
become the first sole Survivor, but it says a lot about the show's place
in Americana that so many people remember the Wisconsin-accented words
of a bitter woman truck driver. It also says a lot about why "Survivor"
is still on TV 20 seasons later.

Who Are the Real Heroes and Villains of 'Survivor?'

Here are our picks for who embodies heroes and villains in the history of "Survivor": (Original seasons in parentheses); asterisk denotes those featured in upcoming seasons.

HEROES

Rupert (Pearl Islands)*: The bearded hippie has already won a million by fan vote. PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- Joseph Gordon-Levitt
charmed Sundance Film Festival fans a year ago with the romance "(500)
Days of Summer."

Now the "3rd Rock From the
Sun" co-star is assailing Sundance crowds with a wild man role in
"Hesher," the tale of a heavy-metal anarchist who bursts into the lives
of a grieving boy and his family.

A flurry of
films that passed through Sundance - the teen dramas "Manic,"
"Mysterious Skin" and "Brick" - helped former child star Gordon-Levitt
graduate into adult roles and showed he was more than just that alien
kid in human form on his sitcom.

In the title
role of "Hesher," Gordon-Levitt bears little resemblance to the
clean-cut young romantic of "(500) Days of Summer," which earned him a
Golden Globe nomination. His Hesher has long, stringy hair, tattoos
everywhere and a mad-dog demeanor that shouts: "Mess with this guy at
your own peril."

"I just love to act. It's my
favorite thing to do in the world, and what keeps it interesting to me
is the creative challenge. So different kinds of characters, that's
what I just love to do," Gordon-Levitt, 28, said in an interview.

"My
favorite kinds of actors are the chameleons, like Daniel Day-Lewis or
Peter Sellers, people like that. To me, the highest compliment you can
pay to an actor is, 'Man, I didn't recognize you.' So yeah, Hesher is
really different from Tom in '(500) Days of Summer,' and you know,
that's what keeps it spicy for me."

Gordon-Levitt has been mixing up his work in
independent films with big Hollywood pictures, among them last summer's
action tale "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and next summer's
"Inception," a science-fiction thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and
directed by Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight").

"Hesher" director Spencer Susser said Gordon-Levitt is a chameleon himself, remaking his persona to fit each role.

"When
I met Joe, I thought he was just a great guy. I thought, I want to see
your Hesher, and we got into a room, we started to play with it, and I
was blown away, because he turned into a different person," Susser
said. "I know Joe now, but I know Hesher, too, and they're different
people."

Violent, profane and unpredictable,
Gordon-Levitt's Hesher insinuates himself into the life of a boy (Devin
Brochu) who's mourning the death of his mother in a car wreck. Moving
in with the boy, his catatonic father (Rainn Wilson) and doting
grandmother (Piper Laurie), Hesher becomes an unlikely agent of healing
for the family.

The film, which also stars
Natalie Portman as a store cashier who befriends the boy, lets
Gordon-Levitt cut loose with abandon as Hesher sets fires, trashes
strangers' pool furniture and plays avenging demon by inflicting nasty
retribution on bullies.

For Gordon-Levitt, it was an irresistible ride on the wild side.

"That
was it. That's why I wanted to do it, and that's really why I do any
movie that I do. I'm lucky enough, I made money on television when I
was young, so I don't have to do parts to support myself. I just do
stuff because it'll be fun and challenge me," Gordon-Levitt said.

"'Hesher'
is easily one of the most fun parts I've ever gotten to play, because
he is really liberated from a lot of the anxieties and stresses that we
all carry around. So to play the part right, I have to do that, and it
was liberating."

WERSINGER
ACCENT EDITOR

With his success in movies like "Elf," and "Catch-22," scores of television appearances including two beloved series, a Grammy and a Peabody Award, it's easy to forget that funny man Bob Newhart got his start in stand-up comedy. But on a chilly Friday night at Peabody Auditorium, a grateful Daytona Beach audience was transported back to those early days by the spry 80-year-old comedian.

In an admittedly non-politically correct show, Newhart drew huge laughs as he touched on a wide range of subjects including Germans ("Not one of the great fun races"), the country of Estonia ("Their main industry is being overrun"), the late Oral Roberts ("His third book chronicled his meeting with Jesus. His third book. I gotta tell you, if I met Jesus, that's going in my first book.") and Miami Heat fans.

Though a chair was brought out before the comedian took the stage, presumably to allow him a break, Newhart never sat down during his 80 minute show. He seemed to draw energy from the enthusiastic crowd of nearly 1,500, as his performance highlighted an impeccable sense of timing and Newhart's famous stammer.

The comedian even poked fun at his Irish Catholic heritage. "The best time to go to confession in Chicago was during a Notre Dame-SMU football game, when the priests would be listening to the radio. 'Go my son, and sin no more. (Suddenly agitated) Will someone please tackle the son of a b----!!'"

Most of his material was refreshingly new, but Newhart reached into his recording past for the "Bus Drivers School" routine, a bit that highlights the icon's comedic genius: One sided conversations that allow the audience to paint their own picture of the instructor, Johnson the rookie bus driver , and poor elderly Mrs. Selkirk, whose sole purpose is to help would-be recruits learn the art of being rude at her expense.

Near the end of his performance, the comedian narrated a film titled "A History of the Newharts," which placed the deadpan Chicagoan in defining moments of time. The piece also showed clips from his iconic TV series "The Bob Newhart Show," and "Newhart," including the latter's famous dream ending that Newhart described as "the best scene I've ever been in."

To complete the feel of an old Las Vegas-style show, singer Connie James and an 11-piece band opened for the comedian, performing classic Burt Bacharach and Peggy Lee standards.

Not content with the art house crowd, she also flirted with the mainstream, collaborating with groups like Blue Oyster Cult and that other street poet, Bruce Springsteen (their song, "Because the Night," made the Top 20 in 1978), as well as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sam Shepard, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe.

Smith's life and enduring career have been documented by noted fashion photographer Steven Sebring in the PBS "Point Of View" special, "Patti Smith: Dream of Life." Shot over a remarkable 11 years, the ethereal film is narrated by Smith herself and comes off not so much as a movie but an impressionistic painting in its own right.

"Dream of Life" debuts 10 p.m.Wednesday, Dec. 30 on WMFE Ch. 24.

Moose celebrated their 50th anniversary this month: While publicists primed media with e-mailed press releases that trumpeted the milestone of these two cartoon characters, there appears to be no new product, or repackaging of old product, to mark the occasion!

Not cashing in on a milestone? That's as un-American as those Russian bad folks battled by moose and squirrel, Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale.

But today's Fanboy-dom can and should celebrate Jay Ward's cartoon, which debuted on ABC in 1959. It's as easy as picking up any of the first three seasons of "Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends" on DVD. The sets also include the adventures of Mr. Peabody, Sherman and their Way-back Machine, "Fractured Fairy Tales" and other comrades.

Yes, these DVD sets have been available for a while, but the dynamic duo's 50th birthday is a good time to remember that "The Simpsons" weren't the first cartoon icons to pack sly wit and satire into episode after episode.

An unbalanced genius like Bishop going at it in his lab is a pop-culture staple. Or even, some would say, a cliche.

But in the able hands of John Noble, who stars on Fox's sci-fi thriller "Fringe," Bishop comes to life. He is both comical and tragic, nutty as a fruitcake yet totally relatable. This is a living, breathing portrayal.

Bishop is a scientist of Einsteinian proportions who for decades was deemed insane and, until "Fringe" started last fall, institutionalized.

Then his long-estranged son, Peter (played by Joshua Jackson), reluctantly agreed to provide the supervision Dad required to re-enter society.

Rounding out the show's odd threesome is FBI Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv). She needed Bishop and his filial caretaker to help her track down perpetrators of "fringe science" who threaten national security and, possibly, the human race.

This calls for Bishop to display his scientific know-how -- while wrestling with his demons -- in a self-styled jumble of a lab complete with his pet cow, all lodged in a basement at Harvard University.

For Bishop's character to work, you have to buy into everything he says, no matter how unhinged.

Noble makes it work.

"I understand Walter," Noble explains. "I can understand his childish enthusiasm quite well. I understand his loneliness, and his attempts to re-establish contact with his son. There's not any phase where I don't kind of understand where Walter is coming from."

The Australian-born, 61-year-old Noble is a theater veteran who for a decade was artistic director of the Stage Company of South Australia, which, during his tenure, produced 70 new plays by fellow Aussies. His extensive film work includes two of the "Lord of the Rings" fantasies, playing Denethor.

Now, he calls his "Fringe" role "a huge gift. It enables me to use a range of skills developed over so many years, and grow a character over a long period of time."

Just how long may be to doubt. In this, its sophomore season, "Fringe" has struggled for viewers.

No wonder. Airing Thursday at 9 p.m., it shares one of TV's most competitive time slots. Its battle to survive against rivals like "Grey's Anatomy," "CSI" and a duo of "The Office" paired with "30 Rock" is a challenge the heroes of "Fringe" face weekly in startling, bizarre and sometimes icky ways.

This makes Bishop's added service as comic relief all the more welcome.

Elbow-deep into an autopsy, he might direct his lab assistant to fire up a Bunsen burner and start preparing some custard.

Then he giggles and, in his Brahmin-seasoned accent, says in wonderment, "It's funny: I love custard ... but I hate flan!"

Meanwhile, it falls to Bishop to voice a lot of complex scientific exposition (plus loopy-sounding theories) to keep the story moving along.

A cinch, insists the actor.

"I certainly have no trouble articulating those concepts when I'm performing a scene," Noble says. "A lot of the science that we delve into is not new to me -- it's fascinated me for a very long time. So it's not like 'Oh, my god, what are we talking about?'"

But what he didn't know so much about was starring in a network TV series -- during the first season, anyway.

"The technical demands of television are far more subtle than they are on stage, and I love that," he goes on. "And the pace of television doesn't worry me. You know that saying: Your first instinct is your best instinct. In television it HAS to be, because that's the only one you're gonna get. So you say, 'Oh, well, here goes!' But that suits my personality."

He says he's not even thrown by getting scripts at the last minute, or by having scant idea what the kaleidoscopic Bishop may disclose about himself in the future.

"I think we established him quite early," says Noble. "I would be extremely surprised, and disappointed, and possibly a little bit vocal if there was a major character shift.''

AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- John Lithgow was going to
pass on the chance to play serial killer vs. serial killer on "Dexter,"
with an Italian vacation, cruise and his son's wedding awaiting him.

He
made it to the ceremony but postponed the trip, and he credits his very
understanding wife of 28 years, university professor Mary Yeager
Lithgow, with pushing him into the plum job.

"She's the one who said, `No, you've got to take the role," he recalled.

Lithgow
guest stars as Arthur Mitchell, the so-called Trinity Killer whose
victims come in threes and who both repels and attracts Michael C.
Hall's Dexter Morgan in the Showtime drama.

Mitchell
fits the profile of those that forensics expert Dexter has judged
deserve to die, but he's also a singular role model. Tempted to learn
how the Trinity Killer has evaded capture, Dexter begins to make
mistakes as he deviates from his protective "code," leading to a plot
twist in Sunday's episode, "Slack Tide."

Lithgow,
who has a nearly courtly manner and is deemed a sweetheart by
colleagues, enjoys bringing the death-obsessed Mitchell to life.

"This
man is very two-faced, like Dexter. A serial killer by definition is a
man who presents himself in a very different way to the world," Lithgow
said. "So it's an actor's field day figuring out what you reveal and
what you don't."

It's difficult to push such a portrayal too far given the behavior of real-life murderers, he said.

"Every
one of these stories that suddenly springs up in the news, you read it
and think, `My God, how could this possibly happen? How could a human
being behave this way?' - which in a way is really liberating," Lithgow
said. "You can't outdo the truth."

While "3rd
Rock from the Sun" viewers fondly remember Lithgow as the egotistical,
foolish alien leader passing as an Earthling, he's played more than his
share of bad guys in movies.

The actor
helpfully ticks off some of the titles, including "Blow Out" and
"Obsession" for Brian De Palma, and "Cliffhanger," in which Lithgow
adopted a British accent and particularly chilling demeanor.

Lithgow's
last TV series was the short-lived comedy "20 Good Years," about two
men trying to make the most of the time left them, a venture Lithgow
called "very sweet and disappointing, of course, as any failed series
is."

"I had a fabulous time with (co-star)
Jeffrey Tambor, one of my favorite character actors. But it was a show
for middle-aged old folks in a young world, so it made us feel kind of
autumnal and melancholy," he said.

Theater
has been his main focus in since "3rd Rock" ended nearly a decade ago,
including "Stories by Heart," a one-man show Lithgow developed and
performed at Lincoln Center for two seasons and was bringing to
England's National Theatre post-"Dexter."

The
work combines short stories Lithgow recalls his father reading aloud to
the family with anecdotes about the actor's own life. He calls it a
"simple but heartfelt evening."

"Basically, I
have a conversation with an audience that turns into a performance
before their eyes. It's kind of a meditation on the whole nature of
performance and why we performers do it, and why anybody would want to
watch."

When told it sounds like an evening not to miss, Lithgow takes a good-natured dig at himself.

"I'll be dragging this one around after me for years and years. You just try to avoid it," he said, laughing.

AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Rue McClanahan, who played
sexy Southern belle Blanche Devereaux on "The Golden Girls," was
recovering Thursday from heart bypass surgery at a New York City
hospital.

The surgery took place Wednesday
and went "very, very well," said friend and colleague Del Shores.
"She's going to be great and up and entertaining us all very shortly."

McClanahan,
75, said in a statement that she regretted missing a tribute to her set
for this month at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.

"Unfortunately,
my doctor has laid down the law, and I'm currently in the hospital
having some maintenance on the old ticker," she said. "Trust me, I'd
much rather be in San Francisco having fun and being adored by all of
you."

McClanahan's problem was discovered
when she underwent tests before a knee operation, said Shores, who
declined to identify the hospital where she was being treated.

In
2008, McClanahan appeared in the Logo comedy "Sordid Lives: The
Series," playing the slightly addled, elderly mother of an
institutionalized drag queen. Shores wrote and directed the show, which
was based on his play and movie.

He was to
perform with McClanahan and "Sordid Lives" star Leslie Jordan at the
New York club Comix at the end of the month. The trio will reschedule,
Shores said, although he and Jordan still plan to perform at the club.

McClanahan

best-known role came in 1985 when she costarred with "Maude" colleague
Beatrice Arthur, Betty White and Estelle Getty in "The Golden Girls."
The sitcom about four older women living together in Miami was a
success that aired until 1992 on NBC.

McClanahan underwent treatment for breast cancer in 1997.

AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- The
Weather Channel plans to show movies for the first time in its 27-year
history and it's easy to guess which one is leading off.

"The Perfect Storm," of course.

The
George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg movie about a horrific storm off the
New England coast will air on Oct. 30, the 18th anniversary of the
actual storm. Network executives had been thinking about adding movies,
and the timing proved too good to pass up, said Geoffrey Darby, the
network's chief programmer.

The network in
recent years gradually slipped in longer programming, including a
morning show hosted by Al Roker, to complement its constantly rotating
forecasts.

"The Perfect Storm" begins a four-week period in which The Weather Channel will try some Friday night movies.

The
films are either weather-themed or have plots in which weather plays a
key role, Darby said. Meteorologist Jennifer Carfagno will host movie
night and offer commentary.

Other movies
include the documentary "March of the Penguins," the thriller "Deep
Blue Sea" and "Misery," for which Kathy Bates won an Academy Award.

The
weather angle is pretty clear in "The Perfect Storm," but "Misery"?
Darby noted the nightmare endured by James Caan's character begins with
a blinding snowstorm.

For The Weather
Channel, the risk lies in alienating its regular weather-obsessed
viewers, who tune in for news of high pressure systems rather than high
drama. The potential reward is that new fans will tune in, and they'll
stay on the station for a longer period, pleasing advertisers.

Darby
said most viewers on Friday night aren't interested in much more than
the weekend forecast, and that will be updated on the screen six times
an hour.

"It's a way to respond to at least a
significant portion of our audience that says, `Let's expand the
definition of weather,'" he said.

The idea
predates NBC Universal's purchase of The Weather Channel, Darby said.
None of the first four movies are distributed by NBC Universal.
