Motorsports Editor Godwin Kelly has taken several members of his family out to a variety of area restaurants for Lunch Bunch/Supper Club features in recent times, which attracted the attention of his mother, Barbara Kelly. Rather than catch ire, Godwin decided to test the fresh catch with his mom at Hull's Seafood Kitchen Restaurant.

Why Hull's Seafood?

I didn't want to have to drive mom all over creation to get a meal. Hull's, which is on Granada Boulevard, is about five minutes away from my mother's house in Daytona Beach on the peninsula side. And, like my waistline in recent years, Hull's has expanded its kitchen/restaurant area and I wanted to check it out.

You were on your best behavior with your mother along for the meal?

You bet I was. Napkin on the lap, elbows off the table. I was saying things like "please" and "thank you" and not talking with a full mouth of food. All the basics we learned in grade-school boot camp.

Describe the ambiance inside Hull's.

It's like eating at a fish-camp dining hall; only this fish camp is in the middle of an urban area. You order up at the counter then wait in the dining area for them to bring your meal in a paper-lined basket. There are not a lot of tables, so be prepared to share space with strangers.

What is on the menu?

Anything seafood. All manner of fish dishes from platters to sandwiches to tacos. If you don't like seafood, don't go to Hull's. They have four items listed under a "Land-Lovers" section. Everything else is fish, crab, scallops, calamari, oysters, clams. You get the picture.

What did you and your mommy get for lunch?

shrimp po boy.jpgI had the shrimp po boy sandwich served on a toasted "Yankee-style hotdog bun," while mom had a fish-n-chips plate. All of it was cooked in the fryer, but the light breading was delicious. And Hull's does something special with those potatoes they serve because they were divine.

Portions?

My basket seemed a bit light, but I've been eating way too much lately, due to the recent subtraction of nicotine from my diet. Mom's basket was heavy with mahi-mahi fish fingers and fresh-cut potatoes. Overall, there was enough to feed the both of us, but no leftovers.

Did they keep their promise to "ensure freshness and quality the Hull's way?"

Hull's Seafood has the freshest stuff in town. They pride themselves on that fact and distribute their daily catch to other area restaurants. When you go to Hull's, you are paying for freshness.

Most important, was your mom happy?

Yes! I got a hug and cheek kiss, which means Hull's is son tested and mother approved.

Total up your bill for me.

Two baskets, one sweet teadrink, and the bill including a little something in the tip jar was just under $20.
