Rock legend Gregg Allman says Floyd Miles taught him how to sing the blues during their days growing up in Daytona Beach in the early 1960s.
Guitarist Tommy Talton (left) says he learned to play with "feeling" when he jammed with his friend Duane Allman in Macon, Ga., in the early 1970s, when both were label mates on Capricorn Records.
No doubt those musical connections to the Allmans will come out when Miles and Talton perform at 8 p.m. July 31 at the Bank & Blues Club, 701 Main St. Daytona Beach. Tickets are $15 at the door. For more information, call 248-1611 or go online at daytonabeachmainstreet.com/thebank.
Talton grew up in the 1960s in Orlando while the Allman brothers were growing up in Daytona Beach. In the '70s, Talton formed the band Cowboy, which combined rootsy Southern rock, R&B and blues. The band became label mates in the 1970s with the Allman Brothers Band on Capricorn Records.
Talton also was the lead guitarist on Gregg Allman's "Laid Back" album, and Talton subsequently toured with Gregg. Talton also was a studio musician and member of the Capricorn Rhythm Section. He has recorded with Dickey Betts, Clarence Carter and country singer Kitty Wells.
Miles (right) and Allman have been friends and occasional band mates since their days growing up in Daytona Beach. Miles still plays percussion and sings backup with Allman when the rocker tours with his Gregg Allman and Friends band.
For their Bank concert, Miles and Talton will perform rootsy rock, soul and blues. Their first set will be acoustic and their second set will feature an electric jam.
