DAYTONA BEACH -- One of Russia's greatest orchestras, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, is making its second tour of the United States to perform some of the most magnificent Russian music ever written. The orchestra returns to Peabody Auditorium for a 7 p.m. performance Jan. 29 as part of the Daytona Beach Symphony Society's 10th annual Winterfest cultural celebration.

The Moscow State Symphony Orchestra was established in 1943 during the turbulence of World War II. The orchestra has a rich history and is a preeminent ensemble in Russia and around the world.

The evening's program includes Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, based on the stories of the Arabian Nights. Considered Rimsky-Korsakov's most popular work, the music of Scheherazade is like a magic carpet. Its beauty and passion can transport you to another exotic world.

Alexander Sinchuk, winner of the 2009 Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition of Moscow, will play Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," one of the composer's best-loved works. It is considered to be one of the most brilliant and difficult pieces ever written. The work is made up of 24 variations on a theme from a composition by the Italian virtuoso violinist and composer Niccolo Paganini. In his time, Paganini was portrayed as a sorcerer and a seducer of princesses. His compositions and violin virtuosity were so great that the most popular tale about him involved his meeting with the devil and selling his soul for fame and glory.

In its 58th season, the Daytona Beach Symphony Society brings the greatest orchestras and soloists, dance and opera from around the world to Daytona Beach.
