Once upon a time, the term "supergroup" was bandied about whenever two or three hoary dudes from various classic rock bands decided to hang out after their glory days had shriveled like the face of the love child of Keith Richards and Queen Nefertiti's mummy. (See entry for "Asia" in Webster's dictionary of supergroups).
 
But the latest supergroup is only one-third old-dude classic rocker: Them Crooked Vultures stars ex-led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, plus drummer and head Foo Fighter Dave Grohl and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist-singer Josh Homme.
     
Grohl first mentioned the group way back in 2005, but we forgive him for not getting around to recording some actual music with TCV until now. If "New Fang," their muscular, swaggering, stomp-filled, just-released single is any indication, TCV may just come about their "supergroup" status the old-fashioned way: by earning it.
