STAR119ACC.JPGWhen J.J. Abrams (of "Lost" and "Fringe" fame) was pegged to helm the latest entry in the "Star Trek" franchise, his 2009 film was billed as "not your father's 'Star Trek."

Hmmmmm ... Impetuous, skirt-chasing captain -- check. Pointy-earred, logical dude from another planet -- check. Hot female communications officer -- check. Snarling, genius bad guy who has the ability to alter the time-space continuum for his own evil aims -- check.

The film was even titled -- surprise! -- "Star Trek."

Abrams' triumph in reviving "Trek" was making his Romulan villain, Nero, a baldie punk with skull tattoos like those a Rage Against the Machine fan scored at Lollapalooza in the '90s.

Abrams' "Star Trek" is your father's "Star Trek," which makes it a worthy addition to the Kirk-Spock continuum. The DVD is in stores now.
