Museum hosts symposium on Florida art

Florida-themed paintings by Thomas Hart Benton, N.C. Wyeth and many other artists will be the subject of "A Weekend of Reflections: A Symposium" at the Museum of Arts and Sciences.
     
mapdata.gifThe symposium, featuring lectures and gallery presentations, will focus on a current exhibit at the museum: "Reflections: Paintings of Florida 1865-1965, From the Collection of Cici and Hyatt Brown."
     
The symposium will be Jan. 15-17 at the museum, 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach. Three-day pass is $25, museum members $20, students with ID $10. One-day passes are $10. Information: 386-255-0285 or moas.org.

Today
5 p.m. -- Welcome reception and meet and greet with the collectors, Cici and Hyatt Brown of Daytona Beach.
     
Saturday
10 a.m. -- Coffee and welcoming remarks by Harold Closter, Director of Smithsonian Affiliations; Wayne D. Atherholt, Executive Director of the Museum of Arts and Sciences; and Cynthia Duval, Chief Curator of the Museum of Arts and Sciences.
10:15 a.m. -- Introduction and overview of the Cici and Hyatt Brown collection with Gary Libby, Executive Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Sciences
11:30 a.m. -- "Historical Florida Painting and the Hudson River School," lecture by Kevin J. Avery, Curator, Department of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
2 p.m. -- "Reflections of Florida's Natural History," lecture by Rudolph Mancke, Adjunct Professor at the University of South Carolina, School of the Environment.
3:15 p.m. -- "Southern Romanticism and Historical Florida Painting," lecture by Jay Williams, the Gary R. Libby Curator of Art at the Museum of Arts and Sciences.
     
Sunday
11 a.m. -- Gallery presentation with Jay Williams.
2 p.m. -- Gallery presentation with Gary Libby.
