The holiday season is over, school is back in session and there are no major holidays in sight. But that doesn't mean there is nothing to do in Flagler County in January.
While a winter chill may be in the air from time to time, there are still plenty of things to do and see -- both indoors and out.
For a glimpse into the future of tourism in Flagler County, a Coffee & Conversation event is set for Jan. 7 at Flagler Auditorium on State Road 100, adjacent to Flagler Palm Coast High School. The event will feature information on print and online advertising opportunities and a discussion of the county's new tourism map. For more information or reservations, contact Laura Gamba at laura@flaglerchamber.org.
Those with a bit of the pioneer in them can enjoy a glimpse into the past Jan. 9-10 with the Pellicer Creek Rendezvous. Public tours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $6 per person at the Florida Agricultural Museum, at the corner of U.S. 1 and Old Kings Road. The event features a living history encampment of trappers, traders, frontiersmen and Native Americans of the pre-1840s.
Stars at the Beach is the order of the day Jan. 8 for the next Music in the Park series concert from 6 to 9 p.m. in Veterans Park in Flagler Beach. The theme is American Idol Flagler Beach style Karaoke with a flair. All are welcome to participate and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. Participants must register ahead of time by calling 386-517-2040.
On Jan. 9, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park will have an Old Fashioned Clearance Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Every plant will be reduced by 50 percent or more. Regular park entrance fees apply during the sale. For more information, contact the Friends of Washington Oaks at 386-446-6783.
The swinging sounds of the Glenn Miller Orchestra will be in the air Jan. 20 as the Matanzas High School Band plays host to the group. The performance begins at 7 p.m. in the school's Pirate Theater. Tickets are available at Aimee's Hallmark in the Palm Harbor Shopping Village and are $25 and $20 for seniors and students. For more information, call 386-503-3956.
Tips on indoor gardening will be available Jan. 23 at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park with the Friends Fourth Saturday Gardening Forum. The event features master gardener Liz Morrison, who will share her tips and hints for growing plants indoors. Admission is $15 for individuals and $25 for couples and includes regular park admission. For more information, call 386-446-6783.
The Flagler Humane Society will put its best foot forward with the Best Paw Forward Fashion Show Jan. 23 from 7 p.m. to midnight. The benefit will feature 20 models in thrift shop outfits. Tickets are available in either VIP packages for $75 or general admission for $25. For more information call 386-445-1814.
January is music month at the Palm Coast United Methodist Church.
The Flagler Youth Orchestra will be in concert at the church, 5200 Belle Terre Parkway in Palm Coast, at 7 p.m. Jan. 16.
The orchestra is an after-school program open to any student third grade and above who lives in Flagler County. Flagler Palm Coast High School students of Ed Beckett will display their artwork as visual artists for this concert.
On Jan. 30, the church will present a Showcase of Young Piano Artists at 4 p.m. with a reception to follow.
Featuring students of Stella Pola, this is the sixth annual concert in the Young Artists Series. Music at the concert will be performed by students ranging in age from 6 to 18 years old and will include a variety of musical styles from classical, contemporary to jazz.
More information about both of the January concerts at the church is available by calling 386-445-2098.
For those wanting a little more adventure in January, the IMAX Theater at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine will be featuring the movie "Sharks" beginning Jan. 15.
The film, produced in collaboration with Jean-Michael Cousteau, 3D Entertainment and the United Nations Environment Program, features Gavin McKinney as director of photography. McKinney will be on hand during the opening weekend to share his expertise and experience in making the film.
The World Golf Hall of Fame is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more information and show times, call 904-940-4629 or go online to wgv.com.
