The Pioneer Settlement for the Creative Arts will be in tune with the new year -- literally.
Fiddlers, banjo players and other folk and bluegrass musicians will perform during the First Saturday Jam from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Jan. 2 at the settlement, 1776 Lightfoot Lane, Barberville. Gates open at 9 a.m.
Admission is $6 adults, $4 children ages 6 to 12, free for ages 5 and younger, members half price. Information: 386-749-2959 or pioneersettlement.org.
There are no scheduled performances. Instead the music will be presented in jam sessions composed of very informal groupings of musicians, as well as during several workshops. The event is open to musicians (bring your instrument) and spectators.
Workshops scheduled include Carol Taktikian presenting beginning fiddle, Ron Whisler presenting beginning old-time banjo and Chuck Spano presenting percussion (washboard, bodhran and other instruments).
Food will be on sale in the settlement's kitchen. Also, the blacksmiths' monthly meeting in the blacksmith shop will be open so that spectators can watch them at their craft.
