An ordained minister will preach the gospel of fancy guitar picking during a workshop at a local music store.
Doyle Dykes, a Jacksonville native, played in the bands of country star Grandpa Jones as well as the Stamps (Elvis' former backing group) before leaving the music world to become a minister in his hometown.
After using music in his ministry to play solo renditions of "Amazing Grace" and "The Lord's Prayer, " Dykes made the decision to delve into guitar full time. He soon gained a reputation as a hot fingerstyle guitarist due to such albums as "H.E.A.T., " "Guitarre 2000" and "Fingerstyle Guitar." His 2004 album, "Chameleon," includes a U2 medley and his version of the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
Dykes also appeared frequently on the Grand Ole Opry stage backing guitar super-picker Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and Tennessee Ernie Ford.
When someone told Atkins that he had the "fastest right hand ever, " the late Nashville legend replied, "Have you heard Doyle Dykes lately?"
Dykes will present a guitar workshop at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at Total Entertainment, 501 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach. Admission is $10 and reservations are recommended by calling 386-254-8727.
