Last year we started what I hope to become a Fanboy tradition. This year, we continue the tradition. It's the 2009 Fanboy Awards!

This week we will kick things off with Fanboy's Top Ten Pop Culture Women of the Year.

But first, the criteria.

To be considered for a Fanny, (Yes, I understand the humorous other meaning of this word. But seriously folks, we're all adults here, right?) a nominee must have made a serious impact on the world of pop culture in the previous year. Special consideration is paid those who overcame diversity in doing so.

So without further ado ...

Gabourey-Sidibe-2.jpg10. Gabourey Sidibe: No one has generated more buzz for a performance this year than Sidibe. As a downtrodden, abused teen in the sure-to-be-nominated film "Precious," Sidibe won over audiences and critics alike. 2010 could be an even better year for the teenage actress as a Oscar nod appears to be in her future.

281x211.jpg9. Stephenie Meyer: What has "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer done this year to warrant being on this list? Actually, nothing. But Meyer might have made more money doing nothing this year than anyone else on the planet. Between ongoing book sales, her cut of the "Twilight: New Moon" box office, (which is already at $498 million worldwide) and a comic book about her story that was released by Female Force, the 36-year-old author has the opportunity to spend a lot more time doing nothing.

anna-paquin-true-blood.jpg8. Anna Paquin: Some of you might remember Paquin as the Oscar-winning 9-year-old from 1993's "The Piano." Others may recognize her as Rogue from the "X-Men" film series. But Paquin has taken the world by storm this year as Sookie Stackhouse in HBO's monster vampire hit "True Blood."

7. January Jones: 2009 saw "Mad Men's" Betty Draper get herself a Golden Globe nomination, a share of a Best Drama Emmy Award, a hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live" and a role in "Pirate Radio" next to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Not a bad 12 months.

6. Rihanna: Rihanna emerged from her very public domestic dispute with former boyfriend Chris Brown with flying colors, putting out a new album, garnering a couple more Grammy nominations and hitting the "SNL" stage.

5. Betty White: If we had our way, Ms. White would be a woman of the year every year. The former "Golden Girls" actress is hitting the mainstream once again nabbing an Emmy nomination for her guest spot on "My Name Is Earl." Throw in her recurring role as Ann Douglas on "The Bold and the Beautiful" and as a scene-stealing granny in the Sandra Bullock vehicle "The Proposal" and you got one heck of a year.

penelope_cruz.jpg4. Penelope Cruz: What better way to end a year you started with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar (for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona") thenthan by hitting theaters with a performance many are saying will earn her another nomination. (For Rob Marshall's "Nine.")

3. Jane Lynch: Before 2009, "Glee's" Jane Lynch was known as "that woman from the Christopher Guest movies." But after a year that saw Lynch's name attached to 16 different projects, she's since become a household name. And though she appeared in everything from cartoon voiceovers to feature films, it's her role as "Glee's" sharp-tongued Sue Sylvester that gets her on this list.

Lady-Gaga-for-Pickard-of--001.jpg2. Lady Gaga: How do you top a year that saw you get nominated for four American Music awards, a Billboard award, nine MTV Music awards, six Teen Choice awards, and a Grammy? Be sure 2010 starts off right with five Grammy nominations.

1. Tina Fey: In a year when Fey's masterpiece, "30 Rock," netted more than 20 Emmy nominations including a Best Actress nod for herself, it's hard to find a more worthy recipient of this year's Fanboy Woman of the Year award. Unfortunately, Ms. Fey would not come to my desk to accept this award so I'll keep the trophy for myself until I can slip past her security at a later date.

Next week it's time for the men.
