SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) -- The head of an Italian-American group says the producers of MTV's "Jersey Shore" reality show plan to go easier on Italian references in the show's second season.

Andre DiMino, national president of UNICO, said he met with officials of MTV's parent company, Viacom Inc., and they promised to cut down on references to Italians, shots of the Italian flag and the use of terms such as guido, which some Italian-Americans find offensive.

"I'm cautiously optimistic," DiMino said. "With a program like this it's still trash television, and it would be unfortunate if they don't de-Italianize the program."

MTV listened to everything DiMino said and "made some adjustments," spokeswoman Ariana Urbont said.

"However, our role is to document the cast, and however they refer to themselves we don't interfere," she said.

Sounds like we got a Situation here.

Cast member Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has no problem using the G-word. She said her fans in New Jersey miss her and she's looking forward to getting back to Seaside Heights when filming resumes next month on the show, which focuses on the escapades of a group of 20-something Italian-Americans at a shore house.

"I'm excited to see the guidos and be back in my homeland, my hometown, and party it up at the shore," she told The Associated Press. "I think it misses me. We're not representing Italians, we're not representing any type of nationality. It's a lifestyle to be a guido, guidette."

Last year, cast members including Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino needed bodyguards to keep away those who thought the show was promoting a negative stereotype. This year, the bodyguards may be busy keeping away the fans.

Alyssa Esposito, a 20-year-old fan of the show, can't wait until it returns to Seaside Heights.

"I think there's going to be a lot more people, and they are definitely going to need bodyguards cause there's a lot of girls," she said. "There are going to be so many girls."

Check out "American Pickers: The Complete Season One" from History (the cable channel formerly known as the History Channel).

The series follows "pickers" Mike Wolfe (at left in photo), owner of Antique Archaeology in Iowa, and his partner Frank Fritz (right) as they "hunt down objects with historical, collectible and pop culture value that have been long forgotten by their owners. From a vintage Harley to a one-of-a-kind Ferris wheel, each treasure hunt uncovers weird and wonderful Americana, offering a glimpse into a little-known side of the antiques business."

The folks at History say it's their highest rated series (which means it's besting the channel's Ancient War of the Week and latest Mummy-o-Rama specials).

The eight-hour-plus, two-DVD set of "American Pickers" is out now.

AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- Barbara Walters said she
will have surgery to replace a faulty heart valve later this week and
take the summer off from "The View" to recuperate.

The television legend made the announcement on the
air Monday. She said she's known about her condition for a while, and
decided with her doctors that this is the best time to have the heart
surgery done.

"Since the summer is coming up,"
she said, "I can take a nice vacation."

Walters,
80, is one of the best-known personalities in television news. She
began on the "Today" show, was the first woman to anchor a network
evening news program, then was one of the toughest competitors in the
fierce game of landing sought-after interviews.

At a time others would be slowing down, she invented
"The View" in 1997 and the daily talk show with a woman's round-table is
a staple on daytime TV. She said earlier this year she was giving up
her annual interview special with actors that traditionally preceded the
Academy Awards.

She said her condition would
be a surprise to many friends. "But I thought it best not to talk about
it too far in advance," she said.

Walters said
she had not felt any symptoms from the narrowing of the heart valve,
which can worsen and restrict the flow of blood to the heart. There are
four heart valves, and they can be surgically replaced by a mechanical
valve, an animal valve or human organ from a donor.

"There's no denying that this is serious surgery,"
said ABC News President David Westin. "But it's also a type of surgery
that has been done often and successfully. and, as those of us who work
with Barbara know, she's in excellent condition. So we have every reason
to expect a great result and a speedy recovery."

Walters said recovery generally takes one to three
months, mostly involving regaining strength.

Former
First Lady Barbara Bush and comic Robin Williams had heart valve
replacement surgery last year.

Whoopi
Goldberg, her co-host on "The View," asked if she was scared.

She said no and pointed to how it has become more
commonplace, but said, "Look, nobody wants to have this kind of
surgery."

AP Entertainment Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- They misspelled Julia
Louis-Dreyfus' name on her Hollywood Walk of Fame star, but the
Emmy-winning star of "Seinfeld" and "The New Adventures of Old
Christine" seemed tickled by the typo.

The
mistake? The star read "Luis" instead of "Louis," and there was no
hyphen between Louis and Dreyfus.

"The
misspelling was so perfectly apt, a great metaphor for show business,"
Louis-Dreyfus said after the Tuesday-morning ceremony. "Right when you
think you've made it, you get knocked down," she continues. "It's an
ideal metaphor for how this business works."

Following
the ceremony, it was announced that the last Walk of Fame honoree whose
name was misspelled was actor Dick Van Dyke in 1993.

Attendees at the Louis-Dreyfus ceremony included cast
and crew members of "Christine," as well "Seinfeld" director Andy
Ackerman, co-star Jason Alexander and co-creator Larry David, who joked,
"I am prepared to give up my nights and weekends to guard this (star)
with my life from the filth and pollutants to which it's prone. Anyone
who so much as sneezes near this area, while I'm on duty ... well, I'll
say, 'God bless you,' but I won't be happy about it."

Louis-Dreyfus, 49, is the first "Seinfeld" principal
to get the Walk of Fame honor, as well as the first to enjoy a
successful follow-up series, "Christine," for which she won an Emmy in
2006. CBS has yet to announce whether it will renew the sitcom for
2010-11. "Oh, I certainly hope we'll be back," Louis-Dreyfus noted. "We
love doing it. And I think it's very likely that we'll be back next
season. Yes."

A spokeswoman for the Hollywood
Chamber of Commerce, which administrates the Walk of Fame ceremonies,
said it would install a new, correctly spelled star and will be sending
Louis-Dreyfus the erroneous "LUIS" and the accompanying chunks of
pink-terrazzo star as souvenirs."

        By DERRIK J. LANG
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LOS ANGELES -- Inside the downtown warehouse where the second season of "Deadliest Warrior" is in production, an impaled ballistics gel dummy -- complete with phony blood-filled organs -- slowly slides down a towering wooden stake.

The grisly snail-like movement, almost invisible to the human eye, is meticulously captured by a super-fast high-speed camera.

"This is the most gruesome thing I've seen on the show," says Dr. Armand Dorian, an emergency room doctor who serves as the show's medical expert. "It's a 9-foot pole going through someone's rectum all the way out through their clavicle. That's pretty bad. Having said that, I have seen similar impalements in real life. Nothing purposely done, of course."

It's just another gory day on the set of Spike TV's popular hypothetical fighting show, which mixes science, history, fantasy and gore to hypothesize the results of make-believe matchups between real-life combatants. On one rainy winter day last month, gnarly Romanian warlord Vlad the Impaler and meticulous Chinese general Sun Tzu were on the fight roster.

While the show's science and technology may be complicated, the premise is absurdly simple: Who would reign in a fight between, for example, a pirate and a knight? The real winner seems to be Spike. The first season averaged an admirable 1.8 million viewers and was the testosterone-laden cable network's best-selling series on downloadable platforms last year.

"You've got gadgets, tidbits of history and medicine, and you've got carnage," says Geoffrey Desmoulin, the show's resident biomedical engineer who also holds a black belt in karate. "I think the reason it's so successful is that it keeps your regular Spike viewer engaged, but it's also bringing in people from Discovery, ESPN and other channels."

With a surprising triumph of a first season, Spike moved faster than Vlad's preferred method of execution to extend the series beyond its made-for-TV concept, spinning it off into the online round-table show "Deadliest Warrior: The Aftermath" and later launching the "Deadliest Warrior: Defend and Conquer" tower defense game for the iPhone.

"With the success of the 'Deadliest Warrior' broadcast and also 'Aftermath' online, we all looked at each other and said this is a real franchise," says Sharon Levy, Spike's senior vice president of original series. "We really muscled the entire force of Viacom behind it. This is truly the first franchise for Spike that is now living on many platforms."

The almost instantaneous franchise, which also includes blood-splattered "Deadliest Warrior" apparel available at Hot Topic, will soon add "Deadliest Warrior: The Game" to the ranks. The violent "Mortal Kombat"-style downloadable brawler for the Xbox 360 allows gamers to create their own battles with a selection of ancient warriors featured on the show.

"The goal of this game is for fans to discover who is deadliest for themselves," says senior game producer Prithvi Virasinghe.

The second season premiere episode, which pits the United States' SWAT force against Germany's GSG-9 squad, is not expected until April 20.

And if the puddles of fake blood and phony limbs scattered across the warehouse floor are any indication, the second season of "Deadliest Warrior" will be much more savage than the first.
