There was a time when radio stations played the Top 40 records in the land regardless of format.

And during that era, there was usually at least one oddball "novelty" record in the mix to bring a little levity to all the "Love Me Do" and "Heartbreak Hotel" sentiments.

These were tunes like "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini," "They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Ha," and "Gitarzan." And for 40 years, the syndicated deejay Dr. Demento has spun these and more recent records that straddle the line between the strange and the comedic every Sunday night.

Now that, too, is coming to an end. The Good Doctor has announced he is ending his show for radio syndication. The Radio Hall of Famer agreed recently to talk about his demented decades.

Speaking by telephone from his home studio in Lakewood, Calif., Dr. Demento said his syndication business was losing money, so he intends to concentrate on building his website, drdemento.com. But the 69-year-old doesn't view this as his retirement.

"My schedule isn't changing a bit," he said. "We will do the Internet show to the same standard as the radio show. In fact, I can add a segment with things I can't play on the radio."

Dr. Demento has always played songs that seem to connect with the 13-year-old brain. "Bra Size 45" and "Shaving Cream" come to mind. But he admits his core audience now is comprised of people who are parents and grandparents who might want to share their love of the novelty songs with younger people.

But at his peak, from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s, Dr. Demento represented something subversive to listeners.

One California kid listening in 1976 was embarrassed when his mother walked in on him listening to a song whose lyrics included the line: "He's got the Cutest Little Dinghy in the Navy."

"His mother heard that and said, 'You turn that off!'"

But "Weird Al" Yankovic was hooked and continued listening to Dr. Demento surreptitiously until one day he sent in a tape parodying the hit single "My Sharona," with his own version, "My Bologna."

The only novelty star of the MTV era was born.

ONLINE:

DrDemento.com
TrevorJoeLennon.com
Listen to Trevor Joe Lennon

Dr. Demento counts helping Weird Al's career take off among his personal highlights. Also: "Interviewing people like Frank Zappa or George Carlin or members of Monty Python ... when I first got the tape of 'Fishheads' in the mail."

Trevor Joe Lennon, a disc jockey familiar to listeners of Daytona Beach's WHOG-FM, interviewed Dr. Demento several years ago for his own program, "Sixty Minutes of Sixties," and came away impressed.

"He was just a real interesting fellow who gave out information in depth on the library of music he had," said Lennon, who left Daytona for Tampa two years ago and is now trying to make his own way via the Internet. Clips from his interview with Dr. Demento can be found at trevorjoelennon.com.

Lennon said most radio stations have such narrow niches, there is no longer room for syndicated programs such as Dr. Demento's. "He's being squeezed out by corporate America."

He aced that one, too, and embarked on a world tour as the youngest member of the Buddy Rich Orchestra.

Bruno went on to play guitar in orchestras for Frank Sinatra, Anthony Newley, Doc Severinsen, Lena Horne and others. He also worked as a Los Angeles session guitarist before jumping into a career as a solo jazz artist.

Bruno will perform two area gigs this weekend, each with the Harold Blanchard Trio: June 18 at Angell & Phelps Café in Daytona Beach, and June 19 at La Crepe En Haut Restaurant in Ormond Beach.

Bruno grew up in a musical household. His father played guitar on the 1959 hit "Guitar Boogie Shuffle" with Frank Virtue, and his mother was a singer.

As a youngster Bruno played guitar for eight to 10 hours a day, and honed his chops by tackling the classical violin etudes of Franz Wohlfahrt and Paganini.

On his website, jimmybruno.com, Bruno says he was "making good money" during his session playing years, "but I wasn't playing any jazz. So I got disgusted, saved some money, moved back to Philly and just decided that I'm only gonna play jazz. I'm not going to play weddings. I'm not gonna take any bad gigs, and if I had to I would take a day gig for a while, and I did.

"I tended bar for 2 years. And it paid off. I wish somebody in school would have told me that."

Since making the move to full-time jazz artist in the 1980s, Bruno has released 13 CDs, including "Sleight of Hand," two "Live at Birdland" sets, and "Polarity" with fellow guitarist and one-time Miles Davis sideman Joe Beck. Bruno's most recent CD is the 2007 album "Maplewood Avenue."

In May 2007 Bruno founded the Jimmy Bruno Guitar Institute, an Internet-based jazz guitar school.

The Harold Blanchard Trio includes Harold Blanchard on piano, Jean-Marc Poitras on bass and Tony Manna on drums.

Who or what inspired you to take up music?

My Dad. Growing up, my father's passion for music was so tangible, I couldn't help but fall for it too. I was 12 when he taught me my first few chords and I was fixated from that day on.

What was the most unusual or memorable gig you've ever played?

I performed at the Blue Bird Cafe for a Sunday Writers' Night in Nashville, Tenn. Hundreds audition for a chance to play just a few of their originals and I was one of the chosen few! At the time I was 16, and it was the biggest performance I had ever done. I was so nervous and I honestly don't remember what happened after I got on stage. All I know is I sang my heart out.

What musician/celebrity/historical person would you most like to have dinner with?

Zakk Wylde. Honestly, it wouldn't be dinner as much as it would be him throwing back some cold ones while I watched him rip on his Bulls-Eye Les Paul. Seriously, he is my guitar hero.

What was the last book you read?

"Frostbite" by Richelle Mead (yeah, I'm a vamp fan)

What CD/tape/music is in your car/home stereo/iPod right now?

Bryan Adams' "Reckless" album and Enrique Inglesias' new single are blasting on my car stereo.

What is your favorite movie?

I don't have a favorite movie, but I'm a huge horror movie buff and a sucker for a love story.

What was the best concert you ever attended?

It's a tie. One was Black Label Society at the House of Blues in 2007. My Dad, Uncle Pat and I waited in line for hours and I ended up being the only girl in the front row. It was loud, insane, powerful and totally awesome!

The other was Hanson in 2008. Yes, the band famous for "MmmBop" in the '90s. My sister and I sang along to songs new and old, feeling like our childhood came back for an encore. Both concerts, however drastically different, were incredible.

Scott, a Massachusetts resident, will be in concert at 7 p.m. June 19 at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of West Volusia, 116 S. Clara Ave., DeLand. The event is open to the public. Admission is a suggested donation of $7 to $15. For more information, call Cheryl Orr at 386-956-6056.

As a member of the Paul Winter Consort in the 1970s and '80s, Scott performed the song "Common Ground" and his own eco-anthem, "A Song For the Earth." He was co-composer of the consort's choral work "Missa Gaia/Earth Mass". Scott performed on four albums by the consort.

Since the early '80s, Scott also has released a number of solo albums, and he formed the instrumental group Radiance with fellow consort veterans including oboist Nancy Rumble, cellists David Darling and Eugene Freisen, and other musicians. That group combined jazz, classical, folk and ethnic influences to create a world music vibe.

Scott has long been active in the Unitarian Universalist Church, and he has led services, presented concerts and offered workshops at over 300 UU churches across the nation. Three of his songs are included in the new Unitarian Universalist hymn book, and "Gather the Spirit" has become a favorite among the denomination.

But the difficult, audio daily double answers would involve such artists as Blk Sonshine, Phinda and Zoro.

Who?

Those musicians and others are featured on "South Africa," a new compilation from Putumayo World Music. The 12-track CD includes such genres as Afrojazz, township jive, Afropop and something called Mbaqanga (a music with roots in the rural Zulu people).

Yes, the late, great singer Miriam Makeba is here, showcased in a very Billie Holiday-style, vintage jazz swing track. Meanwhile, the band Kaya represents that spry, joyous Afropop vibe with "Vulamasango," a song about a guy who cheated on his girlfriend (seems some things are universal among the human species).

"South Africa" is available now, just in time to provide a soundtrack to the World Cup soccer tournament that the nation is hosting. Find out more on the music at putumayo.com.

Who or what inspired you to take up music?

My mom has definitely been a big influence on me musically. She bought me my first guitar and always told me I sounded good even when I first started playing and didn't sound that great. She always had great musicians playing on the record player like Hendrix, Muddy Waters and Bob Dylan.

My dad, who is a musician, has also been an influence. My brother Peyote had a wide range of musical taste, which was an influence on his playing, which became an influence on mine. He thankfully had enough patience to teach me!

What was the most unusual or memorable gig you've ever played?

I'd say playing the Florida Harvest Festival at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. James Brown headlined that show and we got to see him right before he passed away. We played the side stage and there were only two people listening when we started, but by the time we finished 50 or so had gathered to listen.

We also played a festival called the Spring Fling in North Carolina. Mary was pregnant with our son, Samuel, at the time and so was the bass player's wife, Ursula. She was on stage with us sitting in singing, and the energy of having two pregnant mothers on stage was pretty intense!

What musician/celebrity/historical person would you most like to have dinner with?

I'd have to say Jimi Hendrix or Bob Dylan. It would be tough to decide.

What was the last book you read?

"The Shack" by William P. Young

What CD/tape/music is in your car/home stereo/iPod right now?

Soul Taxi, my buddy Jeff White's project

What is your favorite movie?

"The Blue Brothers"

What was the best concert you ever attended?

That's a tough one. I've seen too many to decide just one, but one that stands out is the Rolling Stones at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. They had an amazing show, and a friend of mine who is now deceased was there with me.

Ani DiFranco playing electric at a folk festival in British Columbia stands out in my mind. Everyone wanted her to play acoustic and she ended up coming out on electric with a full band behind her.

"If I didn't play music, I would . . . ":

Still be writing and recording it.

"I'd sell my soul for . . .":

Nothing. It's already been bought and paid for with the blood of Jesus Christ.

Have you thought about a career in rap?

If you're a bit rusty on busting a rhyme, check out "How to Rap: The Art and Science of the Hip-Hop MC"

by Paul Edwards (Chicago Review Press, 340 pages).

With his master's degree in postmodernism, literature and contemporary culture from the University of London, Edwards interviewed Chuck D of Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Mobb Deep, Jurassic 5, Cypress Hill, Pharoahe Monch, Boot Camp Clik, Masta Ace, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Eyed Peas and other artists. The result is lots of advice on flow, rhymes, battle techniques, breath control, fiction versus autobiographical content, use of similes and metaphors, and more.

OK, the chit-chat format of the book ain't even on the level of analysis of Mrs. Grundy's 11th grade English lit class. But who can argue with Myka 9's advice that "the quick-and-easy tool to becoming a good lyricist is reading 'Roget's Thesaurus' "?

"As a little girl I wanted to be Lena Horne," Jordan said on the website ejazznews.com, in an interview commemorating Horne's death in May.

"I will never forget her electric performance at the Saenger Theater which has influenced my interpretation of songs and my stage presentation," Jordan said. "Watching her perform with my father, Kidd Jordan, in the horn section that evening was the first time I imagined myself as a professional singer.

"In Lena Horne, I saw everything that a jazz singer was supposed to be."

Jordan, who performed a tribute to Horne at the 2009 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, will be in concert June 6 at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach.

Akin to other New Orleans musical families (the Marsalis clan, the Connicks), Jordan has lots of familial musical company: Besides her father, saxophonist Edward "Kidd" Jordan, her family includes siblings Kent, a flutist; Marlon, a trumpeter; and Rachel, a classical violinist.

In 2005, Stephanie, Marlon and Kent teamed up with other musicians to record the album "You Don't Know What Love Is."

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina that year, she and her three siblings performed "Here's to Life," singer Shirley Horn's signature song, during the Jazz at Lincoln Center Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert. A recording of their performance appears on the Blue Note Records live album that captured the event (the CD is titled the same as the concert).

Jordan performed the national anthem with saxophonist Branford Marsalis and guitarist Jonathan Dubose at the 2008 NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans.

Along with performing at venues throughout the country, including the Kennedy Center, Jordan also has played an extended engagement at the Palace Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey, and at Marian's Jazzroom in Bern, Switzerland.

Who or what inspired you to take up music?

I've always had music in me, but I remember seeing Jason Mraz live for the first time at Mardi Gras at Universal, and thinking to myself, "Oh yeah, I HAVE to do that for the rest of my life."

What was the most unusual or memorable gig you've ever played?

The most memorable gig that I've ever played was at my baccalaureate this year. I wrote a song for graduation, and played it in front of my senior class, and when the song was over my entire class gave me a standing ovation.

What musician/celebrity/historical person would you most like to have dinner with?

Jason Mraz is my idol, but if I had the opportunity to have dinner with Sir Paul McCartney, I don't think I'd be able to pass that up either.

What was the last book you read?

"The King of Torts" by John Grisham

What CD/tape/music is in your car/home stereo/iPod right now?

I have a plethora of music on my iPod, but I'm always jamming to John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Cas Haley, the Beatles, Cee-Lo and a little bit of Outkast . . . but you probably won't find much country.

What is your favorite movie?

I can recite every word of any Ace Ventura movie or Austin Powers movie.

What was the best concert you ever attended?

The best concert I've ever been to was a Jason Mraz concert in Boca Raton in 2005. As a performer he was very personable, very connected, and he just looked like he was having a blast. And I got to shake his hand, which was pretty cool.

"If I didn't play music, I would . . . ":

Be on "Saturday Night Live."
