Taking Notes

Who or what inspired you to take up music?

Went to migrant worker camps with my father, who preached the gospel and I played hymns on my trumpet. It was in those camps I heard and was mesmerized by the old black men playing what I discovered later on was the real (down-home) blues.

What was the most unusual or memorable gig you've ever played?

Opening for Albert King and B.B. King on the same show. Albert is my favorite guitarist and vocalist of all time. Unfortunately, he passed away a few months later. He was awesome and told me I was pretty good for a white boy, and I got a picture with his arm around my shoulder! It hangs on my wall very proudly to this day.

What musician/celebrity/historical person would you most like to have dinner with?

Muddy Waters and Albert King together.

What was the last book you read?

"I Lived to Tell It All" -- George Jones' autobiography. One of the funniest books I've ever read.

What CD/tape/music is in your car/home stereo/iPod right now?

In my Jeep CD player for the last two weeks -- Johnny Cash's best.

What is your favorite movie?

Too many to list but as of recently, "Cadillac Records." Great soundtrack.

What was the best concert you ever attended?

Albert Collins and his band. Portland, Ore., 1972. First time I ever saw a baritone sax, so long it had wheels on it. Albert (the Iceman) Collins -- the "Master of the Telecaster." Awesome!

"If I didn't play music, I would ... ":

Be a psychologist or in the concrete business with my brothers.

"I'd sell my soul for ...":

Eternal youth!
