Area foodies were abuzz last month when the James Beard Foundation announced the semifinalists for its annual competition that recognizes the best in American restaurants, chefs and sommeliers. Fans of the Spanish River Grill in New Smyrna Beach eagerly spread the word that its chef and co-owner, Henry Salgado, was listed among the names from Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas in the running for Best Chef: South. In fact, it was they who told him.
